Epilogue- Later that night...
BANG! BANG!
I snapped awake. Moonlight shone in through the thin, rectangular window on the opposite wall. Some one pounded on the door again and I scuttled away from it on all fours, stumbling and falling on my butt.
"Visitor!" Came a shout. The door opened.
I clenched my teeth, "Get out!" I snapped.
Terry grinned evilly, put his hands in the pockets of his freshly ironed khakis, and took a step forward. "What? So soon!"
"Go away Terry!" I warned him.
He only laughed, "What's the matter? You can't take the torment like you used to!"
I jumped to my feet, "Leave."
Terry grabbed my arm and I pulled it away. "Come on. He's dead Azu. Gone. Forever." Terry chuckled.
"Why would I ever want to be with the slime that put me here?!" I barked.
Terry laughed again, "I didn't put you here, YOU put you here. You're a smart girl, you ought've known that."
Rage overcame me then and I punched him in the face. Terry clenched my arms in his hands with a deathgrip and shoved me into the sink. He was coming to hit me when the guards rushed in and held him back.
Terry lifted his head and shook the hair from his eyes. "You can be sure I'm going to get them to keep you longer for this..." He snarled with blood trickling from his nose.
I threw myself at him wildly but the one of the guards stopped me. "Leave him to us." He said kindly, pushing Terry out and leaving.
Shaking with anger I threw myself on my cot. "That ass..." I muttered.
Sadly I realized that Terry was probably right about Dustin. He was most likely dead. Gone. Forever. I closed my eyes as tears came and rolled over.
I was going to be in this horrible place for four whole years. More tears. I was drifting back to sleep when I thought I heard something.
I opened my eyes slowly and scanned the room without interest. I was just imagining it.
Almost sleeping again... "happy birthday to you..."
What? I sat up this time and looked around the room rapidly. Nothing again. I'm just playing tricks on myself, I thought.
But then I heard it again, louder. "Happy birthday dear Azu..." I thought for a moment... Yesterday... Yesterday was my birthday and I didn't even realize it!
I got up and looked through the tiny window in my cell door, maybe the guards were singing for me?
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!" A whole chorus of mismatched singers burst. I turned around, that was coming from outside.
I stood on my cot and peeked out of the slim, rectangular window.
I gasped and nearly tumbled onto the floor. There was Dustin and all of my pokemon, standing there. How?? I wondered in amazement, how?
I was too happy for words, I honestly thought I would never stop smiling. "Dustin...I thought-?" I stammered.
He didn't answer, but suddenly there was a white flash behind me and I whirled around. An abra had appeared and I hopped off the bed in realization. I touched the abra's shoulder and in the blink of an eye I was standing next to Dustin and everyone.
My pokemon were all crowding around me saying 'Welcome back!' or 'Azu!'. The happiness was building up inside of me like it was going to blow.
"Hi Azu." Dustin said quietly.
I couldn't take it any longer, I felt like a firework exploding. Without warning I leapt into Dustin's arms and embraced him tightly. Dustin stumbled back in surprise, but then he hugged me back gently.
"I thought you were dead!" I cried joyfully still clinging to his chest.
"Who me?" Dustin said smiling, the embarrassment clear in his voice.
Then the abra teleported all of us someplace else, most likely far, far away from the prison. Anyway, we were in the middle of a deep dark forest now. I gave Dustin a big squeeze, "I just can't believe it..."
"You didn't really think I'd just leave you in there, did you??" Dustin said brightly.
I grinned even wider and finally let go of him, "Of course I thought that! I thought you were dead!"
Then Dustin and I burst out laughing even though what I said wasn't REALLY funny; We were just that glad to see each other again.
I paused, "But now, we're going to have to spend the rest of our lives running aren't we?"
Dustin stopped smiling, and he opened his mouth to speak, but before he could-
'That's not necessarily true...'
Dustin and I both looked up. 'Mina?! What are you doing here??' I asked incredulously.
Th ho-oh was perched on a dark branch above us.
"How'd she find us?" Dustin whispered to me. I shrugged.
'I don't exactly know why I've come back to you...' Mina said proudly.
'Well, we're friends aren't we?' I asked, 'Friends come and visit each other, right?'
Mina looked a little surprised, and I think I might've even heard her laugh a little. 'Yes. Yes...' She She said in a sort of confused way.
'Wait a minute...' I said, 'You know a way to get us out of this mess?!'
Mina hesitated, 'Yes I do.'
'Great! Excellent!' I exclaimed happily.
'I don't know if anyone's ever told you... But...' Mina began.
My face went slack. "OF COURSE!!!" I suddenly burst, jumping into the air with joy.
Why didn't I think of it before??? Mina was my pokemon goddess!!! I could've wished my way out of this situation ages ago!!!!
'I don't usually do this for humans-' She stopped, thinking. 'All you have to do is wish it. So tell me...'
'I- I...' I was about to burst into tears again. 'Thank you Mina!' I cried happily.
'Oh... There, there child... Remember what I said, a long time ago?' Mina said in a noticably kinder tone. 'I said that I'd lived for centuries and never seen anyone quite like you. It's true. Otherwise, I might not be doing you this favor. SO go on and make your wish, then you can all go back to your normal lives. If you ever had a normal life that is.' She added.
"What's she saying?" Dustin mumbled to me.
"You'll see!" I said mischeiviously.
'Come on Azu!' AJ said eagerly. 'The suspense is killing me!!'
'Okay, here goes!' I said with a deep breath. 'I wish that my pokemon, and me, and Dustin, were all free with no questions asked. No reporters bugging us. Just normal.' I thought a minute, 'And if you can- and don't mind that is- throw in a little something horrible for that scuzzball Terry!'
Mina suddenly crowed a blasting, echoing call, and spread her wings magnificently. The sound reverberated throughout the forest for nearly a minute afterwards. Grains of golden light were filtering out through the folds in Mina's feathers it seemed. The beautfiul golden grains were drifting up and beginning to create a ball in the middle of the night sky.
Dustin watched in awe, his face lit by the golden glow. His hand wrapped around mine and we both stared up at the phenomenon taking place before us.
The grains were still flowing from Mina's wings and building up the great shining ball in the center of the sky. It was even more brilliant than the full moon beside it and all the stars around it. As the ball began to reach the size of small car, it lit our patch of forest and the tree tops quite nicely. And for a moment... I thought I saw the shadows of all the pokemon gods and goddesses in the trees and bushes, watching us.
Then, Mina folded her wings and the ball began to disperse into twelve bands and float off into different directions. I pictured them wrapping around the earth like the longitude lines on a globe, except they were beautiful, glittering grains of gold.
The ball was getting smaller and smaller as the grains flowed out into their lines and wrapped their way around the world. Finally, the ball was gone and there were only long strands of golden grains stretching across the sky. We watched as the last grains disappeared on the horizon contently. The wish was granted.
'Thanks Mina.' I said softly. 'Really, thanks!'
Mina just chuckled all knowingly.
'Man, that was really something Azu!!' Dustin said. 'What happened?'
'It WAS beautiful....' But then, my eyes widened and I looked at DUstin in shock. 'W-wait, wait a minute...'
I paced around him, looking on the ground and in the sky and trees. Finding nothing, I looked at him again. 'You. DO you know what you just did?' I asked Dustin incredulously.
'No.' He said worriedly, 'What?'
'You're speaking in pokemon!!' I shouted happily.
'I- what?? I don't know... How?' Dustin stammered.
Mina laughed, 'It's quite simple really-'
'Wow...' Dustin breathed. 'I can understand what you'r saying!' He cocked his head as if looking at Mina for the first time.
'How did this happen Mina?' I asked.
'Ha ha, well. When a pokemon meets his or her god or goddess, they usually only get one- humans USUALLY don't get any mind you!' She said seriously, but I could tell she was only messing around. 'BUT,' Mina paused, 'When it's a pokemon's BIRTHDAY... The wish they recieve reflects every desire in their heart. Counting that they're good desires. We try to sift out the bad ones... Most of the time.' Mina added with a wink.
'So Terry got his just deserts then?!' I said eagerly.
'SHHH!!!'Mina hissed in mock paranoia, 'I can get in big trouble with the others for that one!... Anyway, that explains everything. You're all off the hook scott-free and your friend here has learned the language.'
'You forgot about Terry!' I chimed.
'SHHH!!' Mina hissed again, looking side to side.
'But, wait a second, YESTERDAY was my birthday, not today!!!'
Mina coughed and mumbled something.
'Sorry, what was that?' I asked.
'We can bend the rules a little... THIS TIME.' Mina said, 'Just don't come running back to me for another wish. You only get one in a lifetime, and I CAN'T bend that rule!'
I laughed in disbelief.'Yeah, SURE Mina. Sure.' Then I leaned over to AJ 'Guess we can't make fun of him behind his back anymore.' I muttered, nodding toward Dustin.
'Heh he heh.' AJ chortled.
'Huh? What'd you say?' Dustin said, looking up from the caterpie he was watching with interest.
'Nothing!' AJ and I said together.
Dustin was trying to walk over to us, but he kept getting caught on brambles. When he finally made it, he took my hands in his, still stumbling a little.
'So senseii. I learned everything. Do I get a reward for improvement?' He said, sticking his cheek out hopefully.
I snorted, reminding myself of AJ for a second.
'Pleeeeaaaaase!' Dustin said with a very cheesy grin.
I looked down at AJ for permission. He smiled, but rolled his eyes and sniffed: 'Humans! What are we gonna do with 'em?', in sort of a playful tone.
'I'll take that as a yes.' I said, shooting a glance at AJ who looked away.
'Aww... Go ahead!' He snapped jokingly.
I laughed silently and Dustin and I finally kissed. In my head, all the signals seemed to melt. For a split second, I thought I had died or something, because for once there were no signals invading my mind. Just a blank white wall of sorts- then it dawned on me! White!
It made sense... When separated, white can produce all the colors of the spectrum. If white stood for love, it made sense because love contains all emotions. Happiness, worry, mischief, anger, a little sorrow... All of the color mixed. The only thing love can't have is hate- black, an absence of color. WHy hadn't I thought of this before?
Our lips separated and I rested my forhead against his, my eyes still closed. My signals faded back into the usual, though there was a lot more white than there used to be- there was none before!
'So.' Dustin said. 'Up for a heist?'
I lifted my head and glared at him playfully. 'Dustin! You can't be serious! No. More. Stealing. EVER!'
'But that's no fun!' Barbie butted in cheerfully.
'Yeah!' all the others said together.
'Guys!' I scolded, even though I knew they were all just messing with me.
'How can we be partners in crime if there's no more stealing?' Dustin asked.
I looked at AJ. He had a sad smile on his face, but he nodded.
'Sorry Dustin, but I already have a partner in crime.' I said. AJ gawked at me, eyes wide.
'Well..' Dustin said sort of slyly. 'Why don't I just take that, boyfriend spot you had open?'
I started laughing uncontrollably and kissed him again. Then we all walked off into the dark night.
