* * * *
The lovely aroma of fish and seaweed greeted me in the morning. I groaned. Dustin just had to park us downwind at Vermillion Harbor. I rubbed my eyes sleepily and sat up. Where was Dustin anyway? A note sat on the driver's seat under a rock flapping a bit in the breeze.
Went out 4 food. Be back soon
Dustin
I put the note down and attempted to get out of the wagon but my foot got caught on one of the big sacks Dustin kept in the back. I tumbled over the edge and and landed on my head. It was a good thing the ground was so soft. On another note, I had flipped the bag out of the wagon too and all it's contents were scattered all over the place.
"Awww, geez!" I muttered to myself as I began to scoop up random items and stuff them back in the sack. I bent over and reached down absentmindedly for another thing, then I paused. I opened my hand and noticed it was a shiny red gem. What would Dustin be doing with this? I scanned the ground and noticed more unusual things. Gold rings, necklaces, and something that looked suspiciously like it was made of pure silver. This kid sure had a weird idea of essentials. I looked left and right. What would Dustin think if he found me now? Anyways, I grabbed the rest of the stuff and shoved it in the sack, then I hauled it back up into the wagon.
I stood there a moment, glancing at the other two sacks in there. My curiosity tore at me. It would hurt to see just a bit more would it? No, no it wouldn't, I resolved as I grabbed one of the bags and began rumaging through it. Nothing unusual yet. A load of cans full of Poke-chow, some clothes, a few packs of gum, a photo of a man and woman standing on a beach (his parents I guessed), and something wrapped in black velvet. Something wrapped in black velvet? I fumbled with the material until I had unwrapped a gorgeous necklace. I had never seen real diamonds up close before, but I was pretty sure that's what it was made of. It was so beautiful. I held it up at eye level just admiring it for several minutes. The twinkling almost held me in a trance.
A murkrow cawed loudly making me jump and almost drop it. Hastily, I wrapped the necklace and looked around cautiously. I sighed and grabbed the next bag to continue my nosiness. More of the usual stuff on top to hide what was on the bottom, something covered in plastic and folded neatly. It looked almost like one of those things they cover clothes in at the dry cleaners. I tugged out whatever it was and unfolded it hoping to get a peek under the plastic, but a red envelope fluttered out of the folds. I turned it over but a gold seal etched with a lanturn rising up on a wave and some flowers floating around it held it shut. I put the envelope down beside me and lifted up the grey plastic just a bit. Something blue and shimmering tempted me from inside.
"I want a girl, who will laugh for no one else-" Dustin's voice sang far off.
I gasped, shoved everything back where it was supposed to go, and dove down on the floor of the wagon pretending to still be asleep.
"When I'm away she puts the make-up on the shelf-"
I sniggered silently to myself. Not that he was a bad singer or anything, in fact he sounded pretty good, but just because you never expected someone like him to be singing something like that.
"When I'm away she never leaves the house..."
I could tell he was standing right next to the wagon now. This was just too good of a chance to embarrass him, I just couldn't pass it up!
"Bravo." I said sarcastically as I sat up and smirked at him.
"Huh." Dustin said looking flustered.
I looked at the box in his arms.
~Pudgy-People-a-Plenty-Tastey-Good-Bakery~
and through the transparent lid on top...
"Cinnamon Rolls! Score!" I said happily as I made a snatch for the box.
Dustin regained his manly composure. "Nuh-uh-uh!" He taunted holding the box above my head. "First you gotta tell me your secret."
"What secret?" I said hungrily.
"Don't play dumb Azu. You know what I'm talking about."
"What?" I repeated innocently.
"When I'm around you I feel like there's something I don't know. Are you plotting to kill me or something?"
I chuckled. "You do't seriously think that do you?"
"No, I just really wanna know the secret!"
I laughed again. "Listen, I-don't-have-a-secret!"
Dustin sighed through his nose. "I'll figure it out in time. Just you wait."
"Ok then!" I said all peppy-like. He'd never know. "Can I please have something to eat now?"
"Hmmm....I'd hate to make you starve but...no." Dustin smirked. "No food for you untill I hear the secret."
"Food for my secret, that doesn't seem like a fair exchange..."
"A-HA!" Dustin shouted making me jump. "So you do have a secret!"
"Aaaarg!" I said clutching my head with my hand. "Please, grow up Dutsin!"
Dustin lened over to where our faces were just inches apart like this was some kind of interrogation.
"I will find out the secret."
"Ok, I'll talk." I said noticing the cinnamon rolls within my reach.
"Good. Ha ha ha." He smirked.
"But it is a secret so I have to tell you in your ear ok?" I said walking over to the ear nearest the hand with the box. Dustin smiled eagerly.
"Ok," I whispered. "This is the secret, I have an uncanny talent for distracting dumb people to get what I want."
Dustin made a face, "Is that really it?"
"Nope!" I smirked as I snatched the box from his hands and ran for shelter on the other side of the wagon.
Dustin didn't chase me though. He just looked at me with something a little like admiration. "I will find out." He said almost all-knowingly.
"Hm." I mumbled through a mouthful of tastey baked goods.
I finished my roll and reached into the wagon for my belt of pokeballs.
"What are you doing?" Dustin asked.
"Going to the gym." I replied.
"Azu, wait..." Dustin called as I started to mwalk away.
I turned around. "For the last time, I'm not telling you anything!"
"Azu, it's not that- it's-" His voice cracked.
I kept walking, he probably just wanted to harass me more about one thing or another anyways. I fastened my belt around my waist and selected Benny's ball from the clip.
'Ever been in a battle Benny?' I asked casually in pokemon as I relesed him from his ball.
Benny stopped walking beside me. 'What? Am I about to be in a battle?'
'Well, yeah. I was going to use you to help me win my thunder badge.'
'Oh no!' Benny worried. 'You can't! I would lose! I've never won a battle before!'
'Come on pal, I'm sure your electric attacks are great!'
'well, uh...'
'Come on! I wanna see for my self! Hit me with your best shot!' I smiled hoping this wouldn't hurt too bad.
'Okay then...' Benny said.
A few bolts of static built up between Benny's antennas and there was a huge flash of light. I went rigid and I couldn't seem to get my muscles to work. I couldn't even get my eyes to shut to rid them of the brightness. I could barely breathe and all I could hear was a high pitched buzzing.
'STOP!' I gasped.
'Was that okay?' Benny asked as the electricity ceased.
I lay on the ground smoldering and struggling to breathe. Electricity flicked about my body. All I could muster in response was a hoarse cough.
Benny fluttered to a tree and plucked off a big leaf, then he left returning a few moments later with the leaf full of water. He poured some on my face and poured some into my mouth. It helped a little and I managed to sit up.
'Yeah.' I shook my head to rid it of burnt hairs. 'That was great, you'll win for sure!'
I stood, brushed my clothes straight, and tried to fix my screwed up hair. I should of thought about how I'd look afterward telling him to shock me, now I had to face Lt. Surge looking like a bum.
Benny fluttered up on my shoulder and we began to walk through the city. I noticed a red cloth hanging with a gold medallion in the center. Carved into the surface was the same lanturn, wave, and flowers on the seal of the red envelope. I looked around for a sign to see what it might be for, but didn't see anything and we kept walking toward the tall building in the farthest corner of town. All along the way I saw similar hangings, still not knowing what they meant. Finally Benny and I arrived at the foot of the tall wooden doors. I shoved one side open and squeezed inside. No lights were on, I wondered if the place was possibly closed. The door creaked shut behind us throwing us into complete darkness. I fely Benny huddle against my leg.
"Wow, this one's a cutie." A voice said from somewhere near the ceiling.
"Um, I'm here to earn a thunder badge." I shouted out to whoever said that.
A floodlight shone down on a very tall semi-built figure on a cat walk.
"Yep, definately the best looking challenger all week!" The voice called again.
I squinted into the light trying to see if it was the gym leader or not. From the photos I had seen of the burly guy, the person up there definately didn't resemble him in the least.
"Where is the leader? I want to earn my badge now!" I called up to who ever it was.
The person let out a laugh and the floodlight went off. I heard feet hit the ground in front of me and a spotlight shone down suddenly. It turns out it was a teenage boy with wavy blonde hair- definately not Lt. Surge.
"Allow me to introduce myself." He said suavely as he walked forward. "I'm Terry Surge, the gym leader's son. I was left in charge for the week since he had to go away on business. Who might you be?"
"Just a challenger who wants a badge." I smarted. I wished this kid would just get to the point.
Terry looked slightly amused.
"Very well then challenger." He seized my hand and kissed it. "Lets begin."
Terry clapped his hands and the lights turned on. He motioned to a trainer box and I climbed up the steps into it. Then he gracefully took his place at the one opposite the field from me.
"One on one should do it." Terry said silkily as he inspected a pokeball in his hand. He whipped it out onto the field and a jolteon burst from inside.
'Go on Benny.' I whispered to the volbeat at my ankles.
He gave me a reproachful look but flew out to the field. The bell sounded and the pokemon flew at each other each being bounced back by the other.
'Prepare to die pibsqueek!' Jolteon barked.
Jolteon leapt into the air and several needles shot out from it's back. Benny panicked and zipped around the one aiming right between his eyes. He heaved a sigh of relief and a pin zipped just above his head. Benny flipped out and began to dodge the pin missiles haphazardly with tiny beads of sweat flying off his head.
'Come on Benny! Use thundershock!' I yelled.
Terry gave me a funny look. My heart thumped, I spoke pokemon I remembered with a jolt. I gulped hoping he wouldn't mention it and turned my attention back to the match. Benny was frying Terry's jolteon.
"Rose!" Terry shouted to his jolteon. "Get up! Fight back!"
Jolteon whined and collapsed.
"No!" Terry cried.
Benny stopped shocking the steaming pokemon and looked to me. 'Did I win?'
Suddenly he was slammed against the wall. Jolteon had not actually fainted, she was just faking it to get Benny guard down so she could lash out with double kick.
'You can't beat me! You're pathetic!' Jolteon hissed.
'Don't listen to him Benny! You can do it!' I encouraged him.
Terry gave me a funny look again. Woops... Jolteon stared at me too. Benny took the opportunity to slam it into the dirt. Jolteon used thunderbolt to get Benny from on top of him and tried pin missile again. Benny, having more confidence in himself this time, whizzed easily past them and closed in to attack.
"ZAP CANNON!" I shouted.
Benny must've been thinking the same thing because almost instantly a huge ball of electricity jetted from Benny and engulfed jolteon. I could hear jolteon squealing from inside and her painfully yellow sendings were giving me a headache. The ball dispersed and jolteon emerged looking beat up. She wheezed out a ragged breath and took a step forward as though she were willing to fight on. Benny sniffed and shot out a tiny bolt of electricity at jolteon, casuing her to fall over and pass out.
I crossed my arms and smirked at Terry. Benny fluttered onto my shoulder and repeated the action.
"You do have skills..." Terry began as he recalled his jolteon. "But...I don't think it's enough to win the badge..."
"What?!" I snapped almost causing Benny to fall from his perch.
"Perhaps if you accompanied me to the world famous flower ball on Vermillion Bay tomorrow night I would be persuaded to confer it.." He said silkily.
"Look buddy, I can report you for this, I won fair and square so hand over the badge!"
A look of worry flickered across his face. "Calm yourself, I was only joking..." He said as he pressed the badge into my hand.
"Hm." I huffed as I walked to the door.
"Atleast consider it." Terry said.
I turned my head to him as I slipped out. "Sorry, I only 'consider' people who actually have something worth considering."
Benny and I walked down the road. Or rather, I stomped down the road. That kid really made me angry.
'Atleast I won?' Benny said trying to cheer me up.
I tried to soften my angry face and calm down. 'I'm not that mad. I just got a little, frustrated.'
'You know...I haven't eaten all day and it is getting dark out, I was thinking since there's a sub place over there...' Benny suggested.
Sounded good to me so we stopped in a Smeargle's Sub Pub for a quick bite and left feeling quite refreshed. We walked happily back to the wagon for the night not expecting anything else to happen...
Benny's antennas perked up suddenly and he flew rapidly into the forest.
'Benny!' I yelled and ran after him.
Benny totally ignored me and kept flying. I smacked branches out of my way and kept as close as I could to him. It was a good thing his tail glowed or I would have never been able to see him the coming darkness. I leapt over a small stream nearly tripping and kept on running with fallen leaves getting kicked up behind me. Finally when I had nearly caught up with him he stopped making me crash into his back.
'SHHH!' He hissed at me. He pointed through a crack between two branches.
I peeked in a saw a large pokemon surrounded by a light yellow glow. It looked left and right pawing the ground nervously. I leaned in for a better look. It was hard to make it out even with the glow illuminating it. From the outline it seemed like it might've been....but no, it couldn't be!
'Do you know what that is?' Benny said in a whisper so quiet I could barely hear him.
I stared at him and glanced at the pokemon again who was now stretching and about to lie down.
'Raikou!' Benny mouthed.
My eyes widened in amazement. Raikou appeared to be asleep now. I wanted to get up close to it.
'Most pokemon go through their whole lives never seeing the gods and godesses.' Benny said breathed in admiration.
'Gods? Godesses? I thought they were just legendary pokemon.' I whispered.
'Maybe to you humans they are, but each pokemon has their own god/goddess they look up to because they happen to have been born in their season. I suppose it's a little like the thing you humans have called horoscopes or something like that.' His eyes got shiny. 'I'm so lucky to see mine!'
I gazed at raikou. I wondered which legendary pokemon I had...
'They say,' Benny began, 'That when you see your god or goddess, they might grant you a wish. Just seeing raikou is enough for me, I don't need a wish...'
A far off boat blasted it's horn suddenly and raikou snapped up. He assumed an attack pose and looked around cautiously. Then he leapt off blindingly fast and dashed into the woods. I watched it's glow gett smaller and smaller until I couldn't see it any more.
Benny was still in awe and I shook him a bit so he would snap out of it.
'Sorry.' He said shaking his head. We walked back the way we came until we reached the wagon. It was close to 10 pm and Dustin wasn't even here yet. Oh well, at least I wasn't going to badgered about 'the secret'.
I still thought about my legendary pokemon. I wondered if Benny would actually know the answer.
'Ho-oh.' Benny said suddenly making me jump.
I stared at him. 'How did you know what-?'
He smiled. 'You must still need a little work on learning what your giving away in your thoughts.'
I climbed into the wagon and shoved my backpack over to use as a pillow. 'Good-night.' I said to Benny, then I recalled him. I laid there for a while and finally just when I was about to fall asleep...
"Azu! I've been looking all over for you."
I groaned and rolled over. "What? I don't have a secret I tell you!"
"Err..." Dustin mumbled.
'G'night.' I grumbled and then fell asleep.
