* * *
I yawned, sat up, and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. The air was cool and the sun shone brightly through the trees. A beautiful morning!
Then I remembered.
'Get up! Hurry!' I yelled to Aj and Barbie who were still snoozing away. My watch said it was already 9:45AM. Checkout time was at 10! He would be there any minute now . AJ snapped up suddenly- he remembered now.
'Get up you!' He nudged Barbie.
'Forget it.' I said as I recalled her to her yellow pokeball. 'Let's go!'
I grabbed my bag and we dashed out of the woods and to the hotel we should've been staying at. Just as we wearily made it to the front door I saw Dustin's wagon up the road. I hurriedly sat down on a nearby bench as inconspicuously as possible.
'Don't breath so hard!' I whispered to AJ.
Dustin waved from his seat at the front of the wagon as he drew closer.
"Have a good sleep?" He asked.
"Oh yeah!" I said happily covering up the truth as I climbed in back.
"Where were you at?" I asked.
"Oh, I stayed at Erika's last night." Dustin replied. He glanced over at me and spotted my bracelet. "Hey! That's nice! Where'd you get it?"
"Heh, this old thing? Christmas gift." I said as I hastily pulled my sleeve down over it.
"Speaking of gifts, I got you one while I was out yesterday. It's in that huge sack you're leaning on if you wanna dig it out."
'I hope it's food!' AJ said excitedly.
I rumaged through the sack until I found a round, medium sized package wrapped a little clumsily.
"This it?" I asked.
Dustin nodded.
I tore off the red paper and looked through the transparent lid. Six yellow and white pokeballs with Azu engraved on each one gleamed at me.
"Geez, thanks!" I managed to say through my amazement.
"It was no problem." He said cheerfully. "After you told me you didn't have any pokeballs, it was the least I could do."
How did he know yellow was my favorite color I wondered. Just a lucky guess I guess.
'Where does this get so much cash?!' AJ exclaimed as he shook his head at the extravagant gift.
I sent the image of Erika handing over a bag with a big dollar sign on it to Dustin happily.
AJ sniggered. 'Probably.'
"Well, are you gonna try them out?" Dustin asked. I stared at him. "Go on and capture your nidorino!"
"Oh, right." I said as I reached for one of my new pokeballs giving a 'sorry about this' look to AJ and touched the button to a spike on his back. AJ became red energy, got sucked in, and was captured with a small ping.
There was a bit of awkward silence.
Dustin whistled a happy tune. I sat there boredly wishing AJ were still out. I missed his colorful, rapid thoughts crowding my brain. Aside from the tauros' droning sendings I could hear Dustin's, but they were weak and uniform considering he wasn't aware he did it. Actually, the more I listened to Dustin's thoughts, the more I realized they were purple. He was worried about something.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
Dustin jumped. "Huh?" He said.
"Oh, you just seemed a bit worried about something..." I said mishieviously as I boredly looked over the edge of the wagon.
"Mm." He said shortly.
More awkward silence.
"Wanna see my new pokemon?" I asked in hope of stopping this boredom.
"Unh, that's nice." Dustin said absentmindedly not even realizing that his reply didn't even answer my question.
Hm. Well then... I thought with my eyebrows raised. This kid definately had something on his mind. I decided I would let out Barbie anyway just to have someone to entertain me.
'Where am I?' Barbie puzzled as she was realeased. After a few more moments of confusion, she finally noticed me sitting next to her. 'Oh hi Azu! I was sleepin and then I woke up in the ball and then I was here and I was real confused an-'
"Shhh!" I said.
Dustin turned around. "Sure is a noisy little thing."
'You betcha!' Barbie said enthusiastically as she bounded up front next to him. 'Hey mister, who are you?'
Dustin stared at Barbie.
Barbie stared back.
"What does it want Azu?" Dustin asked in an undertone to me.
I laid down with my hands behind my head.
"Just pet her or something." I said as I closed my eyes for a nap- This was going to be a long ride...
When I woke up I found the wagon had stopped in the middle of no-where. It was almost dark out and Barbie was prancing around chasing a couple of yanma. Dustin was sitting by a bonfire watching her play. I jumped over the side of the wagon and stood shakily. I yawned and stretched rubbing sleep from my eyes and blinking. I reached for AJ's pokeball to let him out but it burst open just my hand was inches from it.
AJ shook all over. 'Azu! I was so lonely in there!' He complained.
Dustin noticed I was awake, "Hi" He said happily.
'Azu! Azu! Wait'll you hear this!' Barbie said excitedly as she rushed over to me.
I patted her head, "What is it?"
'You won't believe it! When-'
Dustin cleared his throat and shot a piercing glance in Brabie's direction.
'Never mind.' Barbie peeped.
AJ and I exchanged concerned looks.
"So, what's for dinner?" I asked without trying to sound worried while walking to the fire. Suddenly a very suprising image popped into my head, I let out a little squeak and stopped dead in my tracks. It was Barbie, she was sending what she was trying to tell me. I was asleep and it looked like Barbie had laid down too but wasn't asleep yet. Then Dustin leaned back and gave me a soft kiss on the forhead. I gaped at Barbie, she nodded.
'Try to act like you don't know.' She whispered.
I sat down on a rock near the fire. "Er- So what are we eatin' again?" I repeated.
Dustin held up a stick with several goldeen speared on it.
I nearly gagged, I hate fish!
"I think I'm going to go find a river and get a drink." I said and wandered away in any old direction. Not really knowing how to find a river or if there was one around here. I just wanted to find something other than goldeen to eat. I meandered absentmindedly for a while until I stepped in something wet.
I looked down.
Water. A lake! I found a lake without even trying! I bent down to take a sip until...
BAM!
Something bashed me in the back of the head.
"Oww, what the-"
I looked around me for what had hit me and spotted a little pokemon passed out cold on the ground. Sure was an odd looking thing. Almost like a little beetle.
'That's our dinner!' A voice sqwawked.
'Yeah! Get away from it!' Another sqwawked.
I looked up to where a couple fearow were divebombing right at me. I quickly pulled out a pokeball and captured the weird pokemon. Then I ran like I never ran before.
'Hey! What're you doing?!' The fearow screeched. 'Bring back our food!!!!'
The fearow were closing in. They saw me capture the thing and were planning to get it back. I stopped and faced them panting like crazy.
'Stop!' I yelled at them in pokemon.
'Why should we?' Said one.
'You just stole our dinner!' Said the other.
No arguing there. Time for plan B - MORE RUNNING!
I dashed through the cattails haphazardly and back into the tall, grassy fields.
"AJ! BARBIE! DUSTIN!!!!" I yelled at the top of my lungs.
'Get back here! We want our food!' The fearow crowed.
I was stumbling over rocks and logs as I entered the forest. Sentret scrambled out of my way and hoothoot screeched at me from there perches. I hoped the low branches would slow down the fearow. I was wrong. The two bird types wove adeptly under and over the trees getting closer every second.
"AJ! BARBIE! DUSTIN!" I screamed again.
I accidentally tripped over a root sticking out and skidded into a tree slamming my shoulder painfully. I got to my feet shakily and realized I couldn't get away now. The first fearow was surging at me.
Sky attack.
The strongest flying attack. I gulped and stared up at the blazing bird formed energy coming ever closer. Then out of nowhere a huge pokemon suddenly leapt clear over me and slammed the fearow to the ground. It tunred out to be a glossy arcanine.
The second fearow had seen it's friend fall and was coming in now. Amazingly, it was frozen in midair and clunked to the ground. I turned around.
Barbie!
'Nice shot huh?' She said with a wink.
AJ suddenly crashed through the bushes behind her along with Dustin. He stepped over and pulled me up.
"That was a close one." I breathed.
"what happened? Why were they chasing you?" Dustin asked.
I held up the ball I had clenched in my fist. "Because of this."
I released the whatever it was from inside to show him and explained the whole thing.
"Looks like a volbeat to me." Dustin said.
"A what?" I aksed.
"Volbeat- a bug/electric type." Said Dustin.
The pokemon gathered around with us to check it out. The little creature opened it's eyes suddenly.
'Am I dead?' It asked weakly.
Everyone but Dustin giggled.
"What's so funny?" Dustin asked.
"Nothin', Nothin'" I said.
'You're not dead!' Barbie piped. 'My trainer rescued you! She caught you!'
'Really?' Said the volbeat.
'And she can speak pokemon.' AJ added.
I bent down and whispered nearest to where I thought a bug's ear might be. 'Are you ok?'
'Oh, I'm fine, very fine actually. Back there I thought I was a goner...'
"What's going on?" Dustin asked.
"Nothing!" I said again.
'I always dreamed of having a trainer! Thank you so much for saving me!'
I nodded as a silent 'you're welcome'.
'Please, please young lady.' Volbeat began.
'Azu.' I filled in for him.
'Yes, Azu, please would you give me a fit name?'
"Azuuuuu, I'm getting freaked out here, why aren't you saying anything?" Dustin whined.
"Shhh!" I hissed. I didn't need any distractions. Names were hard to think of.
'Well?' Volbeat asked.
"Benny!" I said happily.
Dustin looked at me warily.
'Smashing! I just love it!' Benny exclaimed.
"This is just getting too crazy for me." Dustin said shaking his head.
"Don't worry about it!" I said slapping him across the back.
He looked at me with a disgruntled look about his face and sighed. "Do you happen to know the way back to our campsite?"
Benny fluttered up and I noticed he had a round, glowing tail that could help us find our way back.
"Yes." I replied with a smirk.
I used the light to follow my prints the long way back. Dustin followed me looking like a bratty child who would scream a lot.
In around thirty minutes we got back to the camp and sat down on the logs around our fire. I heard the far off wailing of sirens down the road but dissmissed it. They grew closer and a beating purple entered my brain. Was it Dustin? Four cop cars whizzed past toward Saffron and a piercing purple flash so brilliant I fell off my log sliced my head.
"What the heck is your problem?!" I barked at Dustin.
"What?" Dustin said back on edge.
"Nothing, sorry for shouting." I said back realizing he didn't know what he did.
"Hey, um, would you mind if we perhaps went to Vermillion instead of Saffron?" Dustin asked hastily.
I shrugged. Didn't matter to me where we were going. I was, after all, getting a free ride.
"Ok the, off to Vermillion!" Dustin said all peppy-like.
'He definately has a guilty conscience about something.' AJ commented.
He shoved all his junk in the wagon and got in. I recalled my pokemon and got in back, then we took off. I noticed we were going a lot faster than usual, but oh well. It wasn't exactly like I was innocent either.
